Deep South Rodeo Genetics

By Marcia Bennett

Deep South Rodeo Genetics, owned by Keith Strickland, is located in the southwest
corner of Louisiana, North of Lake Charles, LA. He resides in the community of Gillis,
La. Up until 2002 Strickland pretty much raised commercial beef cattle. Then he
decided to change his program up and move towards breeding and raising bucking
bulls. He was introduced to the Rodeo Stock Registry (RSR) site and the Breeder’s
Connection sites by Matt Dillon and became hooked. He sold his beef cows and went to
Jerry Nelson’s yearly sale. He bought 5 RSR cows at the sale. Two months later he
purchased #420 Gusto, a Broke Back V son from James Harper. After his purchase of
Gusto, the bull made it to the PBR Finals two more times. In 2003 after the finals,
Strickland retired Gusto.
Strickland’s main herd sire is #420 Gusto, who has a pretty impressive record. He was
the 1999 PBR High Money Bull, 5 times a PBR Finals Bull and 3 times a NFR Bull.
Again he is a Broke Back V son, Strickland is very high on genetics from Broke Back
V. He also has genetics in his herd from Gunslinger, Mudslinger, Hot Spot,
Grasshopper, Outlaw Willie, Bo,  and other breeding programs.

Since he started in 2002, he now has about 40 cows. 20 weanlings, 6 coming 2 and 3
year old bull calves. This past breeding season he has bred some of his cows to  #415
Cool Spot, who is out of the bull Harley and a Broke V daughter, also with a bull #611
Overstreet who is a son of Jesse James, and a bull Little Da Jose, who is owned by
Keith Nabours and whose calves are showing much promise as buckers. In spring of
2009, Strickland is expecting about 35-40 calves hitting the ground. Strickland has
done some AI’ing and traditional flushes, but prefers to live breed.

Currently Strickland is partners with Jeff Tosh out of Wyoming on a bull that Tosh
has, Snot Slinger. He has done well over this past year and will be going to the ABBI
Finals in Vegas. Strickland said he and Tosh will continue to partner this next coming
year and see what the future will bring them in the bucking arena.

We asked Strickland what his future plans are and he said “ I’m in it for the long
haul, I will be retiring from my day job soon, I’m in law enforcement, and then I will
be able to dedicate more time to my program.” Strickland said “ I hope to see Gusto
proving him self as a great sire.”  I am putting together a PBR bull team for the 2009
season.

Strickland will continue to introduce new bloodlines into his herd. He also wants to
continue in participating in ABBI and NBBA events.

We would like Deep South Rodeo Genetics the best with their program and we thank
you for taking the time to share your program with us.
